Opportunity: Nereid Biomaterials Research and Industry Internships

The Nereid Biomaterials Research and Industry Internships program is a 9-month training initiative designed to prepare undergraduates for the STEM workforce. Interns will work side-by-side with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, government experts, and story tellers to develop, test, and market novel ocean-degradable plastics. Mentors will guide interns in identifying project goals, milestones, and to develop scientific communication, teamwork, and project management skills needed for today’s workforce. 

There are two internships available: Nereid Business Development Internship & Nereid CINMS Internships

Nereid Business Development Internship

Nereid Biomaterials is a cross-disciplinary technology transfer project aimed at commercializing novel ocean-degradable biomaterials and living materials. The Nereid Biomaterials Business Development Intern will compile data on the market for biodegradable materials and sustainable tech, research similar startups and technologies, and participate in other business development tasks guided by the team's Project Manger. Must have interest in blue economy and green tech.

The Nereid Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) Interns will work side-by-side with an interdisciplinary team of scientists to test novel ocean-degradable plastics and addres marine policy. Candidates should be self motivated and interested in research, marine debris, and marine policy. The selected intern will have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork at sea and will be expected to perform independent literature reviews and write government reports.

Nereid Internships:

• Winter/Spring 2024 internships ($500 per quarter)
• Interns successfully completing academic year internships can continue for Summer 2024 (up to $10K stipend)
• Training in scientific communication, team work, & project management
• Must be a full-time UCSB student with a background in Environmental Science, Geography, Biology or Political Science
